Mohtaat

Find out if your Mac is doing something it shouldn’t.

A free security watch for your Mac. It looks everywhere malware likes to hide, keeps watching in the background, and tells you in plain words what deserves a second look and why. Nothing is changed, nothing is uploaded.

Version v1.0.5.261031 · macOS 13 or later · Apple Silicon and Intel

What it is

Malware on a Mac rarely announces itself. It arrives with a cracked app, a fake update or a browser extension, sets itself to start every time you log in, and quietly reroutes your traffic or watches your screen. Your Mac keeps working, so you never think to look.

Mohtaat looks for you, and keeps looking. It checks the places that kind of software has to touch: what starts at login, what is talking to the internet, which apps can see your screen, where your traffic really goes. Once you approve its helper it watches in the background too, even with the window closed, and tells you when something new turns up.

Open it and you see how your Mac stands right now, not a pile of old reports. It is triage rather than antivirus, so it will not promise a clean Mac, but it shows you exactly where to look and why.

How it works

  1. 01

It tells you what actually matters

Every finding says in a sentence why it was flagged, and the serious ones come first. High means normal software almost never does this; medium is a trick malware loves but some honest apps use too; low is worth knowing.

  2. 02

It sees programs as they start

Every program that starts or opens a connection shows up on the Live page within seconds, with who signed it and where it runs from. A download piped into a shell, an unsigned program in a hidden folder or a script run from a temp folder is flagged the moment it appears.

  3. 03

It keeps watching with the window closed

A small helper reruns the checks every one to five minutes and looks at running programs every two seconds, from the menu bar. When something new and high-risk turns up you get a notification that opens straight to it. High only by default, so they stay worth reading.

  4. 04

    It finds what starts itself

Malware wants to survive a restart, so it hides in login items, launch agents, scheduled jobs and profiles. Mohtaat lists every one, reads what it really runs, and flags the ones that download or run scripts.

  5. 05

    It catches traffic being rerouted

One edited system file can send apple.com or your bank to a look-alike site, and a proxy can read everything you send. Mohtaat checks both and flags the entries that point well-known sites somewhere else.

  6. 06

    It shows you what changed

Each check keeps its latest result, not a stack of old audits. Anything that was not there the last time the check ran is marked new, so you look at the difference instead of the whole list.

  7. 07

Set it up once, then no more passwords

A short setup guide walks through three optional permissions: the admin helper, Full Disk Access and notifications. Each step turns green on its own once approved. Skip any of them and Mohtaat still works; those checks just say they need admin.

  8. 08

    It looks, it never touches

Mohtaat only reads. It runs the same built-in macOS commands a security analyst would type, so nothing on your Mac is changed, deleted or sent anywhere. No account and no tracking.

  9. 09

    Mark it and move on

Recognise something? Press I know this one and it stays out of your way, rescan after rescan, and out of your notifications too. Want a second opinion? Export the current state as a report and send it to someone who knows Macs.
